Hi, we're LYT Marketing

You hit boost. You watched that little notification bubble go up. You waited. And then…not much else happened….

Sound familiar? You’re not the problem. Your strategy is.

Let’s Be Honest About Boosting Posts

We say this with an incredible amount of love: boosting posts is not running ads. It feels like it. It even looks like it. Meta has made it incredibly easy to tap a button, hand over $50, and feel like you’re doing something. But without a defined audience, a clear objective, and a destination worth sending people to, that $50 is essentially a donation to Mark Zuckerberg himself.

Studies show that marketers waste, on average, 26 cents of every dollar they spend on advertising, and for small businesses running DIY campaigns without a strategy, that number can climb even higher. So the real problem isn’t that ads don’t work. The problem is that ads without a strategy don’t work.

The Things We Hear The Most

When business owners come to us after a frustrating run with DIY advertising, it almost always comes down to one of these three things (and sometimes all three at once):

  • “I boosted a post and got a bunch of likes, but zero actual clients.”  Likes feel good! But they mean almost nothing for your bottom line. Boosted posts are optimized for engagement; not conversions, not leads, not real business results.
  • “I don’t really know who I’m targeting.”  If your audience is set to “people aged 18-96 within 25 miles,” you’re not targeting, you’re just broadcasting (and broadcasting is expensive).
  • “I ran ads for two weeks, didn’t see results, and gave up.”  Paid ads need time, data, and optimization to find their footing. Two weeks is barely enough time to learn anything, let alone see a return.

None of this means ads are a scam or that they’ll never work for your business. It means there’s a foundation that needs to be in place before the spend makes sense. Let’s walk through it.

Ads aren’t a shortcut to growth.

They’re an accelerant, and accelerants only work when there’s already something worth amplifying.

What Needs to Be in Place

1. A clear, specific audience

This is the single biggest lever in paid advertising, and it’s where most DIY campaigns fall apart. Knowing your audience means knowing exactly who you’re talking to; their age, location, interests, behaviors, pain points, and what they search for when they’re looking for someone like you.

The more specific you are, the less you spend, and the better your results. A Lehigh Valley-based wellness studio targeting women aged 28–45 who follow yoga accounts and have visited competitor pages will always outperform a campaign targeting “women interested in health.” Always.

2. A destination that converts

Where does someone land after clicking your ad? If the answer is your homepage, that’s a problem. Your homepage has too many options, too many directions, and no single clear call to action. Ads need a landing page; one focused, beautiful page with one goal: get the visitor to take the next step.

We’ve seen perfectly good ad budgets evaporate because the destination wasn’t ready. Getting the click is only half the job. Converting it is the other half.

3. A realistic timeline and budget

Paid advertising is not a vending machine. You don’t put money in and immediately get clients out. Most campaigns take 60–90 days to gather enough data to optimize meaningfully. Before that, you’re in a learning phase, and that’s normal, expected, and necessary.

If your budget runs out before the algorithm has learned who to show your ads to, you’ll always be starting from zero. A consistent, sustained strategy almost always outperforms a big burst followed by nothing.

4. Creative that stops the scroll

Your ad has roughly 1.7 seconds to earn someone’s attention in a feed. That means your visual and your headline have to do a lot of heavy lifting, very fast. Blurry photos, generic stock images, or text-heavy graphics will get scrolled past every time.

Good ad creative isn’t just pretty, it’s strategically pretty. It speaks to your audience’s specific desire or pain point, it’s visually consistent with your brand, and it makes the next step feel obvious and easy.

5. Someone watching the data

This is the part that almost never happens when business owners run their own ads: active, ongoing optimization. Which ad is performing? Which audience is converting? What’s the cost per click, and is it going up or down? What should be paused, what should be scaled?

Without someone fluent in the data making regular adjustments, ad spend tends to drift toward whatever the algorithm finds easiest to spend on, which is n’t necessarily what’s best for your business.

Strategy before spend. Always.

The businesses that see real returns from advertising aren’t necessarily spending more. They’re spending with a strategy in mind; spending smarter.

What Strategic Ad Management Actually Looks Like

We don’t just run ads at LYT Marketing. The process starts where we build the whole ecosystem around them; the audience strategy, the creative, the landing page, the tracking, and the ongoing optimization that turns ad spend into actual growth.

LYT Marketing works with small and medium-sized businesses across the Lehigh Valley (and East Coast) – from Allentown and Bethlehem to Easton and beyond, and we understand that every dollar matters. Which is exactly why we won’t run a campaign until the foundation is solid. We’d rather have that honest conversation upfront than watch your budget disappear on ads that were never set up to succeed.

Our targeted digital marketing services include paid ad strategy and management across Google, Facebook, and Instagram, alongside landing page creation, retargeting campaigns, A/B testing, and full performance tracking. You’ll always know where your money is going and what it’s doing.

So – Should You Be Running Ads?

The short answer: probably, yes, but only when the time is right and the correct groundwork is laid. Ads are genuinely one of the most powerful tools available to small businesses! They can put you in front of your exact ideal client, in the exact right moment, with a message that feels made for them.

But they’re not magic. They’re strategic (and strategy is something we happen to be really good at).

If you’ve been burned before, or if you’re sitting on a budget and not sure how to make it work, we’d love to have that conversation. No pressure, no jargon, no one trying to sell you something you’re not ready for. Just an honest look at where you are and what’s actually possible.
